A White Christmas in Africa

Have you ever dreamed of a white Christmas? The kind they show in the movies, with snow and sleighs and multitudes of fairy lights? With our African heat, we’re not likely to get snow in December, but you certainly can plant these white flowers in your garden for your own version of a “white Christmas”!

“Soetgonna” or “Heuningblommetjie” (Struthiola dodecandra) is one of those special shrubs yet to be discovered by many landscapers. Struthiola is an erect shrub to 80cm with wand-like branches and pointed, lance-shaped leaves. The tubular white flowers appear throughout the year, are fragrant at night and are adapted to moth pollination.

On the other hand, a very popular white flower, seen in almost every Wineland Estate, is the rewarding Iceberg Floribunda Rose. This free-flowering shrub rose reaches 1.5m in height and produces clusters of white, fragrant flowers in flushes throughout the year. Prune after each flush of flowers and feed every 3 months with a fertilizer high in Potasium (K), e.g. 3:1:5 fertilizer.
